THE NINE LOOKS OF CATWOMAN by Arterik THE NINE LOOKS OF CATWOMAN by Arterik
DRAWING THE VARIOUS LOOKS OF CATWOMAN OVER THE YEARS, FROM COMIC BOOK COSTUMES TO TV, ANIMATED AND MOVIES. THE HALLE BERRY LOOK HAS BEEN IGNORED FOR OBVIOUS REASONS. THE MODERN DAY SUIT IS FRONT AND CENTER BECAUSE IT MAKES SENSE TO ME AS A CATWOMAN SUIT (NO HIGH HEELS) AND IT'S AN AWESOME SUIT. THE 60'S JULIE NEWMAR SUIT WAS A LOT OF FUN. AND I ALSO LOVE THE MICHELLE PFEIFFER "BATMAN RETURNS" SUIT. AND THE TDKR SUIT IS SMOOTH AND AND COOL. HOPE YOU LIKE IT, I HAD A BLAST MAKING IT.

Posting them individually, 40's look: [link]

Not a big fan of that suit. Technically it's not Selina Kyle either, so that'll do as well. And not a huge fan of Halle Berry, haven't seen the movie, but I've not heard one good thing about it so far.

This is cool. :) Selina has had so many looks over the years and this is truly just the tip of the iceberg in terms of her looks so I can only assume you cherry-picked for what you thought were her most familiar looks which would fit into the "nine" lives concept. Some of her early "The Cat" looks you left out along with her "school marm dominatrix" look, the purple Comics Code catsuit from the Lois Lane appearances, the green sequined catsuit, the pirate suit, the funky orange lion outfit from a cartoon, some variations on the purple catsuit and the costume from "The Batman." But of course, you can't fit 'em all in there!

I've always been fond of the purple '90s catsuit since it had the flare and style that is so ingrained in Selina's character. There are a million black cats... but only one purple one. ;) Of course, Selina also remarked that purple is the colour of royalty and Selina styles herself after that adopting a more regal persona in an attempt to give herself a "rags to riches" narrative in her life. The purple has always suited her more thematically I find and most people don't realize that purple actually blends much more easily into the night than black does (especially a shiny latex suit which will reflect light). Also, the purple costume didn't always have heels. That seems to be a misconception among people who draw that costume. In her solo series from the '90s, her boots were actually flats. :P She also had these super cool snap-on lenses that functioned the way the goggles do only she would use them when necessary so as not to have them shatter in her face during battle (which seems to happen way too often with her current Goggled Emma Peel rip-off costume).

Anyway, I think you did a stupendous job with this and I'm loving all the textures Selina's suits have. Her first appearance dress really stands out to me particularly because of the texture you've given the dress and I also think the Pfeiffer torture device -- err -- costume looks great as well. The shininess to it makes it stand out against the more muted textures of the others. You also did quite well on the claws for that particular outfit. Naturally, Selina's eyes stand out here (though mostly on the ones with green eyes). I also love the little starburst explosion behind them. It makes the piece that much more dynamic. Overall, great job on this! Drawing out Selina's costumes can be a daunting task (especially since there are SOOOOOO many of them) and you did an admirable job with it. :D

This is probably the most extensive comment I've ever gotten. And I love it! You definitely seem to know your Catwomen. And yeah, I was going for nine as the number of choice, so some of the more out-there costumes were cut. The purple 90's suit was one of the first ones I was aware of, and even though it's simple I do like it. I love the one she has now, and I don't think it was originally meant to be shiny latex, we can probably blame Adam Hughes for that, but shiny latex is a lot of fun to draw, I will say that. And the Pfeiffer costume is just crazy cool. The whole pale, contrast thing is a lot of fun. I'm so very glad you enjoyed it so much!I'm posting them individually now, with white backgrounds so you can get the details.

The original Cooke suit was made of some kind of military material. At least, that's what we see on the label of the box Selina got her costume from so it's unsure what kind of material it was made of. It's always more or less had a sheen to it so it's mostly accepted to be either leather (can you imagine how noisy it is when she walks?) or latex (way too shiny). It is likely that Adam Hughes' rendition of it on the covers really vaulted it into S&M status though oddly enough the costume he drew was never actually featured in the issues themselves... making it in an odd way a non-canon costume. Although, his "version" of it was mostly just tweaks here and there.

But wasn't the Cooke suit more of a grayish thing than black? I doubt it would be either leather (As you say, noisy, plus hot) or latex. And the covers are what you see first, so it got stuck on the Latex thing. As I said latex is a lot of fun to draw, but probably not exactly practical for burglaring and jumping around rooftops. Then again, it's comics, it's more important that it looks awesome.

No, it was black. It was a black suit made of some kind of military material but still had sheen to it. Shine really isn't something Selina should have on her outfit since all it's going to do is reflect light. She's better off in matte costumes. I don't really ever buy the excuse of "aesthetics before function" when it comes to costumes for characters since I think you can have both. You can make a stylish costume and have it be practical. It does more justice for the character as well because when they're drawn in impractical costumes it makes them seem like incompetent idiots who don't know how to dress themselves. Hell, I've heard one too many women say that they can't take Wonder Woman seriously because of her costume (and as is made evident in the afterword to the first issue of the new Captain Marvel comic, the same was said for Ms. Marvel in her black costume).

Amazing work! Selina's been one of the few to have a range of costumes where hardly anything sucked.

Exactly, she has that. Let me see if I've got them right, from the left it's:

Original 40's Look? Classic Earth 1/Earth 2. Year One/Long Halloween, 90's/Knightfall, Modern/GC Sirens, 60'S Batman, Batman Returns, TAS and Dark Knight Rises.

Will you be tackling any other DC or Marvel Ladies this way?

YES! That is exactly right. I don't know if I'll do anybody else. Who else has such a cool costume lineup? Storm maybe?

Wow, I am better at this than I thought. I think Storm would be a good choice. Jean Grey between her clones and the like could work too. As a Kitty Pryde fan I'd suggest her but I'm not certain if she's had that different looks compared to Selina. If you fancy one of the guys then clearly Wolverine has a different outfit for every team he's been on. ;)

Jean doesn't sound like a bad option. Probably Jean or Storm next, plus it helps to have the Ultimate versions as well. And they don't have to be nine, it was kind of cool to have nine Catwomen. I'll start doing my research!

Good choice! Thinking off my head there's Yellow Suit/First Class, Marvel Girl/Green Suit With Mask, Green Phoenix, Dark Phoenix, White Phoenix, 90's/X-Men Cartoon, New X-Men, Movies, Dark Phoenix Movies, Ultimate Suit, X-Men Evolution... plus Goblin Queen for the clone and arguably Hope Summers since she's sorta Jean reborn.

That's 12 suits! Plus there's the X-factor yellow and green and then yellow and red suits. I'll have to be picky about this one.
